Join Dr. Jennifer Jo's private studio in Los Angeles!
I teach private lessons to students of all levels, ages, and goals in Los Angeles. I currently maintain a studio of many Los Angeles area students, adult amateurs, and college students. I served on the faculty at the California Summer School for the Arts at CalArts and was previously the flute instructor at the Hollywood Boys & Girls Club.

I have over 10 years of experience teaching flute– from beginners to university music majors to adult amateurs. My students have won many national and international competitions, placements into CBDA and SCSBOA Honor Bands, top Youth Orchestras in LA/Pasadena/Santa Monica, prestigious summer festivals, as well as State Honors awards up to Panel in the MTAC Certificate of Merit Exams.

experience
I am passionate about education and have been teaching students of all ages for over a decade in the San Francisco Bay Area, Pittsburgh, and currently have a studio of over 15 students in Los Angeles, as well as students from across the country on Zoom. I currently work with students as young as six years old to college music majors to adult amateur students. My students have won principal chairs in their school bands, honor bands, youth orchestras, and top prizes in national/international competitions.

As a native California music student myself (raised in the Bay Area), I am well-acquainted with the school ensemble systems, Regional and All-State honor bands, local youth orchestras, and summer programs. I am a registered teacher for the MTAC Certificate of Merit exam system and my students have passed various levels up to Panel Finals and have been selected for Convention Honors Recitals.

I have a home recording studio with a professional stereo microphone set up, and I am adept with professional video/audio editing using Logic Pro, Studio One, and Final Cut Pro X. I help my students with professional recordings/editing for online performances and competitions.
philosophy
I teach essential problem-solving, communication, organization, and time-management skills that extend beyond music and into everyday life. Each week, students receive personalized and structured lesson plans tailored to their needs. My individualized practice plans help students manage their time effectively and achieve their goals. Understanding that students have demanding academic and extracurricular commitments, I emphasize the importance of practicing efficiently (quality over quantity). Coupled with my background in Psychology, I apply proven learning techniques to adapt my teaching style to each student's unique needs.

My teaching experience includes serving as flute faculty at the California Summer School for the Arts at CalArts, along with years of experience as a Teaching Associate/Assistant at UCLA.

My teaching curriculum integrates repertoire spanning of all musical genres, etudes, technical studies, music theory, ear-training, and basic music history. I am committed to helping and inspiring you to achieve your goals, whether you are simply learning for enjoyment or aspiring to win an audition or competition, all while developing your maturity and enjoyment for music.

"Ms. Jo has taught me so much in my past lessons and I have improved both as a flutist and a chamber musician. Not only is my lesson informative, but it is also very entertaining as Ms. Jo teaches in a fun and enthusiastic manner. She also teaches me theory and is very informative and comprehensive. If you are wanting to play flute, I highly recommended studying with Ms. Jo!"

"Flute lessons with Ms. Jennifer are so fun and I learn so much every week. I get a lot of compliments from my band teacher in school and always feel so ahead of everyone. She teaches me technique, classical pieces, Disney songs, and music theory in a very exciting way. She is also so nice and patient so I feel comfortable asking her questions."
